As the first article of the blog on Bowtieology, I would like to start with the very beginning.

What is actually a bow tie?

You, of course, all know the answer, or you think you do.

Here is what Wikipedia tells us about bow ties: The bow tie is a type of men's necktie. It consists of a ribbon of fabric tied around the collar in a symmetrical manner such that the two opposite ends form loops.

The bowtieologist knows that a bow tie is, above all, a ribbon-type fabric tied, in the shape of a butterfly. He insists on the fact that it is tied, which is, in his humble opinion, the inner essence of bow ties, and this is unfortunately ruined by all the pre-tied bow ties, or shall we say pre-not-tied bow ties.

You probably wonder where we are heading, let us show you with pictures.

You can clearly tell the difference between the two of them, one is cold as a rock, flat as paper, and as dead as a door nail, pinned to your neck. On the other hand the self tie bow tie shows perfectly the subtlety of the silk satin fabric, with a very generous knot, puffy and not perfectly symmetrical, that is how you do spot a proper bow tie.

The other point is when wearing a self tie bow tie, depending on the silk and lining used, it can either have a slight droop if made of light printed silk, making it more delicate and subtly feminine, or it can be a generous woven silk offering volume and panache, for confident, modern gentlemen.
The only time a pre-not-tied bow tie would be acceptable is when the fabric does not allow you to tie it, such as velvet bow ties and some other very thick fabric. It is not by convenience or lazyness that they come pre-not-tied, it is simply because you could not tie them due to the fabric.

We must keep in mind that the very ritual of tying a bow tie has long been lost partly because of the pre-not-tied bow ties, it is elegant gentlemen’s duty to perpetuate this too often neglected tradition. There is the art and the manner of dressing up, and tying a bow tie must be part of the knowledge of modern gentlemen, just as we are.

Pour ce tout premier article je vais commencer par la base, l'essence même du noeud papillon.

La question essentielle est de savoir qu’est-ce qu’un nœud papillon ?
Vous connaissez bien sûr tous la réponse, ou peut être le croyez vous.

Voici ce que notre cher ami Wikipédia a à nous dire sur les nœuds papillons : Le nœud papillon (familièrement « nœud pap » en France, et « bow tie » en anglais) est une sorte de cravate, dont la forme une fois nouée rappelle celle d’un papillon.

A la Bowtique, nous savons qu’un nœud papillon est avant tout un nœud, en forme de papillon, comme nous le dit Wikipédia. Nous insistons sur le mot nœud qui est à notre avis le plus important quant à l’essence même du nœud papillon mais qui est bafoué par les nœuds pré-noués, ou devrions-nous dire indénouables et surtout jamais noués.

Vous vous demandez probablement où nous voulons en venir, nous allons vous montrer en images.

Ceci n’est pas un nœud papillon, il n’en a que l’apparence, ne vous laissez pas tromper.

C'est un nœud pré-pas-noué qui ne peut être ni noué, ni dénoué. Ce n'est donc pas un nœud. Si quelqu'un pense le contraire, je veux bien lire votre plaidoirie.

Le rendu visuel d’un nœud papillon à nouer est une toute autre chose que le rendu d’un nœud pré-pas-noué. Un nœud à nouer aura, suivant le tissu et la doublure utilisée pour la confection, du volume et du bouffant pour les soies lourdes et généreuses, un beau flottement et/ou tombé pour les soies délicates et légères.. alors qu’un nœud pré noué aura une tenue raide, immobile, posé à votre cou comme une roche, supprimant tout l’effet de panache du nœud papillon. Et nous n’aborderons même pas la qualité des tissus utilisés pour ces dits nœuds papillons, se rapprochant plus du plastique que de la fibre naturelle.

Gardons à l’esprit que le fait même de nouer un nœud papillon est un acte du vestiaire masculin qui a été perdu dans les affres du temps, il en va aux hommes élégants de perpétuer cette tradition bien souvent négligée de nos jours. Il y a l’art et la manière de faire les choses simples de la vie, nouer un nœud papillon devraient faire partie des savoirs de tout homme élégant.
